Manuka Honey: The “Enemy of Bacteria”

This honey, produced in New Zealand by bees pollinating the native manuka shrub, is known for its antioxidant properties.

Components of Manuka Honey: Hydrogen peroxide is a component of honey, giving it most of its antibiotic properties. However, some types of honey, including manuka honey, also contain other components with antibacterial qualities.

The main antibacterial component in manuka honey is the compound methylglyoxal (MG), which is also found in most types of honey, but usually only in small amounts.

Manuka honey contains MG, which comes from the conversion of another compound called dihydroxyacetone. High concentrations of MG are found in the nectar of manuka flowers. MG is believed to be responsible for manuka honey's antibacterial potency, and the higher the MG concentration, the stronger its antibiotic effect, which determines the honey's true benefits.
